Our philosophy of hiking
We at Backcountry Bard define hiking as "a long walk in nature, usually on trails in scenic areas." While hiking offers physical fitness benefits, it is not our primary mission. Instead, White-tail Hikers focuses on the mental and spiritual fitness of hiking and fellowship with the group. We look to reconnect with nature to work out whatever we need to within ourselves. Each hiker is free to go on the trail at their own pace.
Our hikes are defined as "day hikes," which are hikes that are completed in a single day. Typically, we hike between two and six miles, spending anywhere from one to three hours on the trail.

The 10 Essentials

Navigation such as a map, compass, altimeter, GPS device, personal locator beacon (PLB) or satellite messenger

Headlamp with extra batteries

Sun protection such as sunglasses, sun-protective clothes, and sunscreen

First aid kit, including foot care and insect repellent (as needed)

Knife plus a gear repair kit

Fire matches, lighter, tinder and/or stove

Shelter carried at all times (can be a light emergency bivy)

Extra food beyond the minimum expectation

Optional gear to consider for a
White-tail hike
Here is a list of optional gear to consider in addition to your hiking pack with the 10 essentials:
- Trekking poles
- Additional clothing for the forecast
- A trashbag for carryout
- Communication equipment (phone, walkie talkie)
- Emergency contacts and medical information
- Itinerery with at least 2 people outside the hike
- Camera, video recorder
- Journal, sketchpad
- Books about geology, geopgraphy, plants, wildlife
- Geocaching or other outdoor games that educate and explore
