Campfire Dutch Over Baked Apples

The Perfect Campfire Treat for Crisp Evenings in the Backcountry

Why This Recipe Works

When it comes to outdoor cooking, simplicity and flavor are key. This recipe takes minimal prep and zero special equipment beyond a Dutch oven and some foil. Wrapping the apples in foil locks in moisture and flavor while allowing for easy cleanup, making it an ideal dessert for hikers, campers, and overlanders alike.

There’s nothing quite like the aroma of cinnamon and apples drifting through camp as the sun dips below the horizon and a fire crackles nearby. Whether you’re deep in the backcountry or just posted up at a cozy campsite, Dutch oven-baked cinnamon apples wrapped in foil are a simple, soul-warming treat that hits all the right notes: sweet, spiced, rustic, and effortlessly satisfying.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium apples (Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Granny Smith work great)

  • 4 tablespoons of brown sugar (or maple syrup)

  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 2 tablespoons butter (cut into small chunks)

  • Optional add-ins: chopped nuts, raisins, a dash of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prep the ApplesCore each apple, leaving the bottom intact to create a little well for the fillings. You can peel them, but leaving the skin on helps them hold their shape.

  2. Mix the Filling. Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small bowl. Add any optional extras here, such as pecans, walnuts, or a spoonful of oats, which all work great.

  3. Stuff the Apples. Pack the filling into each apple’s core. Top with a pat of butter for that golden, rich flavor.

  4. Wrap in Foil. Place each apple on a square of heavy-duty aluminum foil and wrap tightly to seal in steam and flavor.

  5. Bake in the Dutch Oven. Place the foil-wrapped apples in a preheated Dutch oven. Nestle them close together, cover with the lid, and bake over hot coals for 20–30 minutes. You can also place a few coals on the lid for even heat distribution.

  6. Serve Hot. Carefully remove the apples from the oven and let them cool slightly before unwrapping. The smell will be incredible. Serve as-is, or top with a dollop of whipped cream, Greek yogurt, or a scoop of ice cream if you’re glamping.

Pro Tips

  • Go Cast Iron: If you want a caramelized bottom, unwrap the foil and place the apples directly into the Dutch oven for the last 5–10 minutes of baking.

  • Flavor Variations: Add a splash of bourbon or a sprinkle of granola for a twist.

  • Campfire Friendly: Do you lack a Dutch oven? Toss the foil-wrapped apples directly into the coals and rotate occasionally for 25–30 minutes.

A Taste of Autumn, Any Time

These baked cinnamon apples are the fireside comfort food that tastes like home, even when you’re miles off-grid. They’re easy to make, endlessly adaptable, and sure to bring a touch of rustic sweetness to any outdoor adventure.
